Tokyo Attacked By A Turtle![]()
It’s the miserable lull between Christmas and New Years when there’s absolutely nothing worthwhile in the news, so why not talk about Gamera?
I remember one of the most exciting things about getting our first VCR was being able to go down to the newly opened discount video store and rent old monster movies. For me, my monster of choice was Godzilla. But right next to him on the fifty cent shelf at the HEB Video was always something called Gamera. The boxes had a picture of a giant turtle on them, and I was quick to declare the idea rather silly. My parents protested. Apparently, they’d seen the shellbacked creature in their youth, and had some sort of affinity for him. We rented… and the thing really was goofy, in that sort of joyously goofy way that only those old Japanese, Tokyo destroying monsters can be. Well, Japan is resurrecting all those city-stomping monsters lately, so why not Gamera? Yep, that’s right, they’re redoing Gamera, this time with slightly more modern technology. Don’t worry, he can still fly and yes, it still looks pretty cheesy. So, since there’s nothing else in the news, take a look at the trailer for Japan’s attempt at rebooting their once sort of proud giant flying turtle franchise Gamera. I stumbled on it over at Twitch Film, a good place to go for giant turtles. Click here for a giant freakin turtle trailer. |
