Tom Cruise is continuing onward in his quest to prove he’s funny. Variety says he’s eyeballing an action-comedy called Wichita as his next starring role.

The movie is about a secret agent who pops in and out of the life of a single woman. Cruise would play the secret agent and Cameron Diaz is in negotiations to play the single woman. Cruise and Diaz haven’t worked together since Vanilla Sky (unless you count her Minority Report cameo) in 2001, a movie which nobody but me really seems to appreciate. Come on! It’s good.

Apparently this script has been through a lot of doctoring, but the most recent rewrites were done by Scott Frank, which is a good sign. Raise your hand if you love The Lookout. Thank Scott Frank for that. Meanwhile James Mangold, best known as the director of 3:10 to Yuma and Walk the Line is set to direct. Usually extensive rewrites aren’t a good sign, but with Mangold and Frank involved it’s hard not to be optimistic about Wichita.
