It’s official: Disney is making Toy Story 3. Stop cheering, they aren’t the people responsible for Toy Story 1 & 2. They’re just the people who advertised and distributed 1 & 2. The folks responsible for Toy Story greatness are gone, and Disney refused to let them take their characters with them. Disney owns them lock, stock, and barrel so now they’re putting together their own digital animation studio to suck up millions of dollars from your wallet by creating doomed to be inferior Toy Story sequels and squeezing every dollar they can get from the franchise, no doubt destroying our fond memories of it in the process. Hey, they own The Incredibles too!

But none of this is news. What’s news is that the third Toy Story movie (which isn’t even really Toy Story without Pixar) took another giant leap forward towards happening this week with the creation of a new Walt Disney Studios digital animation office in Glendale, California. Run by David Stanton, Disney’s president of feature animation (which is these days mostly direct to video), their number one project is, you guessed it, Toy Story 3. Will they get the same voice talent to return? Can they possibly create animation on par with Pixar’s? Doubtful. Disney’s recent 2D animation track record is pretty lackluster, and their animated storytelling has been nothing short of a disaster. Leaping into the digital world won’t suddenly make them any better. But, as long as there is money to be made, they’ll continue.
