At Fantastic Fest last weekend the audiences who showed up for the Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3D screenings were treated to the first-ever look at the trailer for Toy Story 3, setting up a world in which Andy has grown up and gone to college, and Buzz, Woody and company are forced to find a new home.
This weekend's audiences for the movie as it goes nationwide will get the same treat-- but anyone thinking they'll just catch the trailer on their computers won't. Lee Unkrich, director of Toy Story 3, announced on his Twitter feed that the trailer for Toy Story 3, will be available in theaters only during the two-week run of the Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3D double feature. It's a ballsy move from Pixar, who are counting on people paying theater ticket prices to see movies they have probably owned and loved on DVD for years now. But will seeing the new trailer be enough of an added boost to get people in the theaters?
Hey, maybe-- you never know. Obviously a pirated version of the trailer will hit the internet sometime over the weekend, but given that the trailer is in 3D as well, it'll be pretty damn impossible to watch. Anyway, remember how much better the Avatar footage looked on the screen than it did on your computer? This'll be even better.
