I’ve been curious about Smart People for while, given that it stars ladies-of-the-moment Ellen Page and Sarah Jessica Parker but no one was really ever talking about it. Then it was pushed back again and again in the release schedule, which is never a good sign. I had chalked it up to a movie the two did with some unknown director, plus Dennis Quaid and Thomas Haden Church, and no one would ever see it because it was terrible.
But now the trailer is available here, and you know what? It looks pretty good. Quaid plays a college professor who seems to take no interest in his job, with a precocious teenage daughter (Page, of course) who takes care of him. His life is thrown into disarray when his slacker brother (Church) comes to town, just as Quaid’s character is beginning a romance with a hot doctor (Parker). OK, Parker as a doctor is a bit of a stretch, but the other roles are pretty believable. Plus, you never realized it until now, but Dennis Quaid and Thomas Haden Church look a whole lot alike.
Check out the trailer and judge for yourself. It’s the directorial debut from Noam Murro, and I’ve been burned by trailers in the past, but I don’t know, I have a good feeling about this one. Let’s see how long it lasts.
