Trailer For The Duchess

By Katey Rich: 2008-01-01 18:32:20
Trailer For The Duchess I’m all in favor of Keira Knightley taking the roles that she likes and wearing whatever costumes she wants, but the girl is really risking typecasting herself by constantly appearing in period dramas. If there weren’t so many tabloid photos of her on the red carpet all over the place, we might all forget what she looks like when she’s not in a corset.

Keira’s next adventure in elaborate hairstyles and horseback riding is The Duchess, a—you guessed it—period drama about the real-life Duchess of Devonshire. The new trailer, available here, tells us essentially nothing other than what you’ve probably guessed. She’s a much-admired duchess, men all want to be with her, she’s really strong willed, and at some point Ralph Fiennes professes love to her and/or sleeps with her. Seriously, Voldemort? Isn’t Keira a bit too young for him?

The Duchess’ Wikipedia entry tells us that she tolerated her husband’s affairs and had some of her own, and also loved gambling, both tidbits that would have been more interesting than the trailer they give us. I guess there’s some appeal to generic costume dramas, but man, this woman sounds way more fascinating than the trailer lets her seem. The movie is coming out next fall, which gives them plenty of time to build up anticipation and let us see this as more than just another Keira Knightley costume drama.

Well, she wasn't in a corset in her last film (Atonement) and won't be in her next one either (The Edge of Love).
But I'll admit it has been a while since she was in a contemporary setting.
Yet if the story is interesting does the time period really matter?
And that's the problem with the teaser for The Duchess. The film might have an interesting story, but it certainly isn't apparent from this trailer.
