As his hair turns even grayer, the George Clooney we see on screen is settling into middle age nicely, and turning late-career introspection into an art form. Last year he did it brilliantly as a corporate downsizer re-examining his life choices in Up in the Air and this year it looks like he’ll apply a similar brand of regretful longing to playing an assassin in The American.

The movie’s first trailer has arrived and it’s everything we’ve come to expect from Clooney at his very best. He’s a killer looking to get out of the business, on his last job, and considering all the things that have brought him to where he is. Of course, at some point, there’s a girl.
