Trailer: Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo![]()
Though no self-respecting movie fan would ever consider watching the dubbed version of a live-action foreign classic, when it comes to animation, we'd rather our kids hear celebrity voices than struggle to keep up with subtitles. That's how, in the new trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo, you hear voices like Liam Neeson, Cate Blanchett and Matt Damon coming out of the Japanese animator's distinctive world. Hey, could be worse-- at least all the celebrity voices are pretty respectable.
You can watch the new trailer below, and head to Apple.com for high-res versions. Ponyo is inspired by "The Little Mermaid," a story about a young goldfish who manages to become human. Mermaids, goldfish, what's the difference? Ponyo comes out August 14, in a window when most of the summer's big kid-targeted movies will have already come out, and we'll probably all be exhausted from explosions. Miyazaki's movies have never captured American moviegoers the way they enthrall critics, despite boasting animation and stories worthy of our beloved Pixar. Maybe this one, coming out in cinematic dead zone of August, will have more of a fighting chance.
