Trailer Trash

By Josh Tyler: 2006-08-25 00:00:00
Movie trailers aren't just a way to advertise something. Like a great poster trailers have almost become their own trashy art form. Hollywood runs on advertising overdrive 24 hours a day. Trailers come out, some of them we get, some come unhitched and end up here, in Trailer Trash. We sort out the Star Wagon's from the Camperland rentals and keep only the best.

Man of the Year
What would happen if Jon Stewart became president? Personally, I think the world would be a better place, but Man of the Year thinks there might be problems. Robin Williams plays a Stewart-like television host who runs for president as a gag... and then accidentally wins. My interest in this film was pretty low before this, but the trailer is a nice reminder that yes, Robin Williams actually is funny.

Beer League
With Beerfest opening this weekend, it's a good time to take a look at the other drinking movie opening this year, Artie Lange's Beer League. Here's the thing: If you think that putting Artie Lange's name in the title is the best way to sell your movie, then maybe you might be in trouble. The trailer plays as if the script was crafted as a thin framework in which Artie could spout drunken one liners. Maybe that's not the worst idea ever, but it hasn't worked for Chris Rock, why would it work for him?

Little Children
If you're planning to watch the trailer for Little Children to find out what the movie's about, forget it. It'll do you no good. It's a confusing mess of images and creepy dialogue, beautifully shot but ultimately not exactly informative. The official plot says it's a film about people's lives intersecting on the playground, so think of it as a drama about what parents are doing while their kids are busy swinging on the swings.

Jesus Camp
Every year there's at least one documentary that everyone absolutely needs to see. For 2006, Jesus Camp may be it. Wonder how an idiot like George Bush got to be president? Wonder why the country seems to be going in the toilet? Jesus Camp may have the answer. If you watch this trailer and it doesn't creep you out, then you're probably one of the folks the film is documenting. For the rest of us, the normals, this is the most terrifying movie trailer of the year.

Bug
Bug is easily one of the year's most eagerly anticipated horror movies, and with Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. on board they haven't skimped on the cast. They've gone and gotten people who can act. What a refreshing change of pace for the horror genre. This is a trailer probably better seen on the big screen, but watching it here you'll get the gist. Bugs. In your skin. Not good for your complexion.

Zerophilia
If Jesus Camp is the scariest trailer of the year, then this is by far the weirdest. Zerophilia is the story of a teenage boy who turns into a woman when he becomes sexually aroused. Puberty, as you might imagine, is hell. You're just going to have to watch this one to believe it. I'm not sure whether to laugh or vomit.
