Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen opened in midnight showings around the country last night and packed in huge, huge audiences. In fact it’s the second biggest midnight opening of all time.

In just one night, Variety says Revenge of the Fallen earned $16 million. The biggest midnight run of all time was last year, when The Dark Knight earned $18.5 million. The previous second place record holder was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which earned $12 million in July of 2007.

Expect more record breaking numbers as even more people pile into theaters to see this Michael Bay monstrosity. That $16 million open will count towards the film’s Wednesday totals, which means Transformers 2 could be headed for the biggest Wednesday opening ever.
