Tribeca Film Fest Premieres Spider-Man 3

Tribeca Film Fest Premieres Spider-Man 3 For the past few years, Austin’s South By Southwest film festival has been pretty firmly entrenched as the third biggest fest on the planet, a ways behind the heavyweights of Cannes and Sundance. This year though, for the first time ever, word on the street is that Tribeca is well on its way to eclipsing it. Actually, that seems to have been pretty well confirmed today when the folks at Tribeca announced that they’ll play host to the biggest movie of the year, Spider-Man 3.

Yep, Spider-Man 3 will be at Tribeca. How did Robert De Niro’s little film festival get so big? Most seem to credit the festival’s willingness to hoover up corporate dollars. While festivals like SXSW have fought to stay independent from corporate interference and focus primarily on the art of filmmaking, Tribeca has gone with a take all comers approach, and wraps itself in a warm, green nest of big money sponsorships and corporate logos. That’s rocketed them past other competing festivals, and now enables them to get the likes of Spider-Man 3 while SXSW made do with the premiere of Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up.

For now, Tribeca is high profile. Whether or not it’s high-profile for the right reasons probably depends on how you feel about having an American Express logo plastered on your theater seat.

Luckily for us, Cinema Blend’s own Lexi Feinberg will be on the ground at Tribeca this year and plans to swing from rooftops to work her way into Spider-Man 3. Keep an eye out for all of her Tribeca 2007 coverage on our Tribeca page here.
