Documentaries are an easy way to get into the film biz, all you need is a camera and an interesting subject. Point and shoot and you're at least likely to get the indie crowd buzz. Spellbound (the docu about kids in a spelling bee, not the Hitchcock film) director Jeffrey Blitz made the leap from documentarian to film director with last year's Rocket Science, and now it looks Marilyn Agrelo's (Mad Hot Ballroom) is going to try to pull of the same transition, with "Ugly Betty's" America Ferrera in tow, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The project in question is An Invisible Sign of My Own. Based on Aimee Bender's novel about a 20-year-old loner named Mona Gray (Ferrera), the story follows Gray as a school teacher who uses math to help her students through tough, real-life problems. Math as a coping mechanism? Most people use alcohol or drugs. This sounds like the work Wedding Planner writers Michael Ellis and Pamela Falk (it is).

While Ferrera has been busy with her hit TV show, she's made time to be in The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants and Under the Same Moon. Ferrera has a gap between early May and June in "Betty's" schedule to shoot An Invisible Sign of My Own. Too bad they didn't use "Sine" instead of "Sign," it could have been the delicious pun in an otherwise bland-sounding film.
