Last summer it was Spider-Man, the year before that we had X-Men. This is the summer of Batman and the Fantastic Four. There are movies in development for just about every super-hero known, from Batman, X-Men, and Spidey sequels, to next year’s Superman film and the eventual Ghost Rider picture constantly on the horizon. You’d think the super-hero encyclopedia had been covered, but one more entry just became a possible motion picture subject: Underdog
That’s right, the gentle Shoeshine Boy, lover of sweet Polly Purebread, transformed by a lab accident into the caped canine Underdog will be flying into theaters soon courtesy of Walt Disney Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment, according to Variety. But, just to make sure Disney doesn’t do something altogether intelligent, the movie will be a live action film.
That’s right; a motion picture telling the tale of a super hero dog will be filmed as a live action flick, meaning that there will be a ton of CGI effects. What’s worse though is the script description. The script, written by two virtual unknowns (Joe Piscatella and Craig A. Williams) features, “a diminutive hound named Shoeshine gets superpowers after a lab accident. When he's adopted by a 12-year-old boy, the two form a bond around the shared knowledge that Shoeshine is really Underdog.” Which means, instead of placing the movie in a world where dogs walk around wearing clothes, run stores, and report stories Lois-Lane-style, the movie is pretty much going to be another Good Boy or Cats & Dogs, where super-canine animals interact in a human world.
I can only imagine what rhymed couplet Underdog would come up with for this:
I must fly away, be back in a bit
Avoid this movie which sounds like…
