Underworld 3 Without Beckinsale

Most of us thought we’d seen the last of the Underworld franchise after the piss poor box office performance of Underworld 2 earlier this year. But it looks like Underworld 3 is happening anyway, probably because these movies make so little to make that it’s not very hard to turn a profit, even with lackluster audience attendance.

The third movie will again be written and directed by Len Wiseman, but even more surprising than its existence is the news from MTV that Kate Beckinsale will not be allowed to reprise her role as the vampire Selene in the film. She told them in a recent interview that she's out, even though in the opinion of most she's the best thing about both of the previous movies, and she’s also Len Wiseman’s wife, so you’d think she’d have no problem getting the gig if she wanted it. But Wiseman is taking the franchise in a different, cringe-worthy direction: He’s making a prequel.

Few things kick audiences into instant power-down mode faster than the word “prequel”, but it’s not like Underworld 3 was hotly anticipated anyway and it’s probably better for Kate Beckinsale’s career long run to stay far away from it. This is a pretty good thing for her, to be able to move on to something that people might actually want to see without having to tell her husband “no thanks”. However, it’s hard to see how this could possibly be a good thing for the Underworld series, to ditch it’s star and the only good thing about it in favor of new characters fans care even less about.

Don’t be surprised if Underworld 3 ends up straight to video.

OK all you people who are saying 'replacing beckinsale would be stupid' or 'OMG why isn't beckinsale there???' are retarded, it's a prequal, before Selene existed as a vampire, and i personally think it's gonna be great, it was always an interesting piece of lore in the movies and I will be intrigued to see it expanded. I am thrilled that they kept all the original actors as well, (with the exception of Sonja, but that was to be expected) I look forward to seeing this in theaters

Look there's no bigger fan of Beckinsale than I am. Granted she is no longer going to be in the series, but if any of you seen the trailer, it's definitely going in the right direction (pre-qual, backwards, irony?) The trailer is fantastic and I look forward to seeing it with an appetite for the storyline. It's about time this part of the story was told. The setting takes place before "Selene's" time anyway and sets the stage for the plot of the previous films. I think it will be even better than the first two in its own way.

Kate (Selene)...if you read this...remember...your still my favorite vampire... :)

OMG! I just saw the trailer and I love it! Heck! Anything in this genre, I love....As long as there's vampires, werewolves, loads of action, and some gore. This is a PREQUEL and something i've been waiting for ever since Underworld (part 1). I've been highly intrigued with Lucian's story ever since and finding out the reason for the war between the 2 races. Ahh! Like Romeo and Juliet [swoon]...sort of.... I can not wait for the movie to hit theatres! HOWEVER, it would be nice to see a scene when Viktor changes Selene (ergo a brief appearance by Kate)...even at the end of the movie. After all, Selene IS what makes Underworld...well...Underworld. That scene would definitely tie the 3 films together.

I think u r right..about the scene that will tie the 3 movies together..but i think that New moon (from the Twilight saga)will hit theatres too..i'm a big fan of Twilight!And some friends too..

Hey guys I love underworld just as must as the rest of you, but the reason Kate is not in the movie is because they are going back to how the whole war started between Vampires & the Lycans. In which Kate was not a part of, if you remember from the first underworld they showed a flash back from when Lucian bit Michael and showed him how Victor killed his own daughter because she fell for a Lycan and got pregnant.

This was the start of the war, if you recall the lycans were the protector to the Vampires before they became they slaves. and Lucian was the Lycan that Sonja (Victor's daughter) fell for. This is why Victor hated Lucian and his kind so much.

But I think you should check it out with a open mind. The trailer looks really good.

I haven't heard so much pissing and whining since my dog's last bladder infection.
Yes, Kate and Scott made the first two movies what they were but (as has been pointed out several times) this is a prequel.
It's a chance for us to get to fill in some of the blanks from the first two movies and a chance for the production company to get us warmed up for the next.
And from the preview it looks like it could very well hold its own.
Think of all the possible story lines that might follow from here on out.
While the chances might be small and we shouldn't hold our breath for Kate making a cameo or starring in another sequel you can be absolutely certain there won't be one at all if this movie flops.
Want to see Kate again? Go see this movie and see it for what it is...with an open mind.

ok i agree with cian and all you weirdos who are like oh kate beckindsale isnt in it im not gonna see it yeh i love her she is a great actor but it is before she is bittin and before she is born it is about sonja and lucian and Rhona Mitra isnt playing selene she is playing sonja so stop complaining i have seen the trailer and it looks GREAT!!!!!

Yeah I think the makers are dead right in making a prequel.
It will wrap up this great series very nicely. I'm glad that Selene (kate beckinsale) doesnt star in this one. If she did it wouldnt make sense.
This is the story about how the lycans broke out of slavery to start their war with the vampires which is still going on up until 'Underworld'.
The characters in this will be the characters who were around long before selene was born and bitten.

I think it will be another really good movie and it should add a lot more depth to the other two movies and the characters in them.

Ok, Bill? first of all, incase you hadn't realized the majority of the batman films don't include Robin, the first two didn't have him in and the last two haven't had Robin in either, and Nolan said he would never put Robin in. But maybe the media attention and buz around those last two films passsed you by..
As for the 3rd Underworld not having Kate in it...-it's a prequel, if you paid attention to the first 2 films you'd know that Selene wasn't around at this time, or if she was she wasn't a Vampire.

OK rant over. I for one am pretty excited about the whole premise, i thought this story could be explored some more when they mentioned it in the first film, and i do love werewolf films

Well like it says this is a prequel im jsut as pissed off that kate wont be in it but im sure shed be in the 4th one especially of this movie makes a decent turn around. It looks interesting anyway so before you all get competely discouraged jsut keep t hat in mind, and make sure you go see the movie.

I cant beleive it!!! Kate beckinsale is a great part for the movie...y is she pissing all these people off? is it because she is in love with one of the cast members still? i bet so.... y bother going for the part if ur not gonna be in all the movies? that was a horrible mistake!!! Sleen better be replaced because that is the only reason the movie is watched......the relationship with michele and sleen is a very interesting part with the movie...

I agree with most sentiments on beckinsale's character being well cool but there is so much more to underworld than selene. In fact I am quite thrilled at the thought of seeing lucian in action back at the start when the crap quite literally hit the fan, was quite dissapointed with his demise in the first one it was I dunno anti climatic especially after seeing him 360 over cars etc. But yea I believe the corvinus stuff will get featured after all william was there sire I am sure the lycans had planned on freeing him and if not they where definitely aware of there origins and the corvinus bloodline as you see in the first one. So lets just hope gets good budget and kicks ass then they make fourth movie with selene in it and hybrid, vampire, lycan crossfire where the lines are seriously blurred.

Well I think this is how they should have made the movie: Selene and Michele go on a new Lycan killing mission and Selene got a preview of her past and Michele asks her if she is all right? and she says that she is fine but Michele won't believe her so he tries to figure it out. But Selene ends up telling him later on while killing Lycans at the same time. Then Selene gets hurt by a sword and Michele tries to help her out as her boyfriend. Then Michele saves her life..........Then they end up having a son together........... Then later on in the movie victor ends up returning from his death. and goes after Selene and Michele.........
And well that is what I got so far.

Rhona Mitra is playing the new selene guys bit late for kate as its laready being filmed in giant warehouses in the outskirts of Auckland, personally i cant wait til its relesased as its exactly my kind of miovie lol xx

Greetings to all from Serbia.Underworld saga is awesome.I agreed to you all and I hope that Kate will change her mind.Although underworld 3 is prequel I believe that no one can replace Kate in the movie.Thats why this story without true Selene on the screen will suck.And that's why I won't waste my eyes watching it.

hey ppl i love underworld and all even if kate isnt in it im going to see but she still could be back if the make another you know for publicity and all take away the best part then suddenly bring here back and have every fan jumping back to see their fav most kick ass vampire( way better then blade and all the others) it would be nice to get the history behind the movies i really hope for another one after three cause they left it on a real cliff hanger after number two kate was the best part of the movie i agree and hopefully they make a number 4 with her in it and a game would be kinda nice were you could choose any main character from the movies peace out ppl

Well, first off i want to say the first one was good and the second was better. But honestly,......HONESTLY what is all the hype about to kate? Freakin Scott Speedman (kate's lover in the movie) was a total BADASS. Freakin hybrid and shit. AMAZING. (just thought i would clear that up) lol. But its a prequel tho. So it should be pretty good. And understandable since kate won't be there or (alive during the time frame of the movie) Besides Lucian (in my opinion) was probably the most bad-ass lycan EVER! Probably could have taken Victor because of his venom for killing Sonya (his lover) But Kraven is a pussy, so i am glad he died in the 2nd one. haha. Hopefully this is good tho.
