Universal Making Untitled Luc Besson/Angelina Jolie Thriller![]()
We told you last week about the word that Angelina Jolie would be teaming up with French writer/director Luc Besson for a new untitled action film. Now it's official and the project has found a home at Universal. Deadline reports that Universal has picked up U.S. distribution rights for the still-untitled Besson/Jolie collaboration.
The story still doesn't provide any plot or premise details. At this point all we know is that it's "rooted in true scientific elements." That could mean, well, pretty much anything. Still, given Besson's knack for creating unforgettable action movies starring female protagonists -- La Femme Nikita, Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element -- Angelina should be a natural pairing for him. Production on the movie is set to begin in April, with Besson writing and directing. It would be nice to see Angelina in a really solid action film again, because it's been a while. Salt was just okay, and the less said about The Tourist the better. The last genuinely awesome action flick Angelina was in was Wanted in 2008, although her time spent as an animated kung-fu tigress also deserves recognition. Given the fact that she usually looks like she's one missed meal away from a coma these days, it's hard to explain why Angelina makes a convincing action hero, but she seems to make up for in attitude what she lacks in muscle mass. Besson once made a believable badass out of Milla Jovovich wrapped in band-aids, so his pairing with Angelina should make for something awesome. |
