Upcoming X-Men Movies And TV: What’s On The Way From Marvel's Mutants

Where things stand with Marvels mutants in movies and television has changed a great deal in the last few years. For years, the rights to the X-Men and all associated characters from the comics belonged to 20th Century Fox, keeping those heroes and villains in a parallel universe from the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe… but everything changed in March 2019. That was when the merger of Fox with the Walt Disney Company was completed, and just like that, a future was paved that would eventually see mutants in films and TV shows produced by Marvel Studios.

There are a lot of unanswered questions about what’s going to happen with the X-Men and other mutants in film and television in the years to come – but updates roll in from scoops and official announcements are made, so we’ve put together this feature to keep track of everything in the works. We’ll continue to add to this guide as more information about future plans are made public, but for now, here is everything we know about the upcoming X-Men movie and television projects.

Deadpool & Wolverine

We don’t yet have a clear idea of what will become of the continuity that was built up over the course of 20 years via 13 X-Men canon blockbusters, but the good news is that we will know very soon. There aren’t any plans in the works to follow-up the stories from either X-Men: Dark Phoenix or The New Mutants, but Marvel Studios has fully embraced the popularity of the Deadpool films, which is why we will soon be getting director Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine a.k.a. Deadpool 3.

As revealed in the first Deadpool & Wolverine trailer, the story in the new blockbuster will directly follow the time travel antics at the end of Deadpool 2 and find Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool living happily and surrounded by friends. His carefully constructed world all comes tumbling down, however, when the Time Variance Authority comes literally knocking at his door. Instead of being in trouble (a la the Loki variant in the Disney+ series Loki, Wade is told that he is getting his call to arrive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – though the adventure will involve facing off against a serious big bad. Fortunately for us, he’ll be getting the opportunity for a long-awaited team-up with James Howlett a.k.a. Logan a.k.a. Wolverine.

The outstanding cast in Deadpool & Wolverine is headlined by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the titular heroes, but the ensemble runs deep. Emma Corrin is playing the film’s central villain, and it’s been confirmed that the movie will see Morena Baccarin, Stefan Kapicic, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Rob Delaney, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, and Lewis Tan reprise their respective roles from Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Aaron Stanford will be back as John Allerdyce a.k.a Pyro for the first time since X2: X-Men United, and it’s been reported that the blockbuster is overstuffed with surprise cameos.

Theoretical Upcoming X-Men Movies

There are some X-Men and X-Men related movies that we’re pretty certain are on the way… but official announcements and details are lacking. That’s what this section is for.

Avengers: Secret Wars

When Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were in the works, one of the most exciting things about the twin blockbusters was the fact that they were finally going to include interaction between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the Guardians of the Galaxy. In retrospect, that worked out blissfully – but Marvel Studios is going to have to raise the bar when it comes to the next big crossover event, which is why it feels safe to assume that we’re going to get at least some mutant action in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars.

The upcoming film, currently dated for May 2027, is set up to be the capstone film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ongoing Multiverse Saga, and the assumption is that it’s going to see continuities colliding. Nothing has been confirmed, but it would certainly add to the scale of Avengers: Secret Wars for the blockbuster to include a version of the X-Men team that will get to fight alongside the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Fantastic Four.

Just as it feels safe to assume that at least some mutant characters will be playing a role in Avengers: Secret Wars, it also feels safe to assume that we will eventually at some point see Marvel Studios tackle the creation of their first live-action X-Men movie centering on Professor Charles Xavier’s team of gifted youngsters. Unfortunately, an assumption is all we have at present, as the franchise has not yet officially announced such a project or even vaguely hinted at what we might expect from it.

Because it looks like a new X-Men movie won’t come together until after the completion of the Multiverse Saga, we may still be years away from hearing anything about it truly moving forward. For now, all fans can do is speculate about the characters who will be included in the lineup and the talented filmmakers who will be given the task of shepherding the project.

Earning critical raves for being an ideal throwback to the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series from the early/mid-1990s, X-Men '97 was instantly deemed a big win for Marvel Studios when it premiered in March 2024. Following the 10-episode adventure in Season 1, the superhero franchise already has plans for more, as a Season 2 was officially announced in July 2022.

Beau DeMayo, the credited creator of X-Men ’97, reportedly completed work on the second season of the series in 2023, but he was fired by Marvel Studios shortly before the series’ premiere on Disney+. Producer Brad Winderbaum has confirmed that a third season of the show is in development (via Entertainment Weekly), but it is not yet clear who will take over DeMayo’s role in the creation of the episodes.

A release date has not yet been announced for either X-Men ’97 Season 2 or X-Men ’97 Season 3.
