In less than a month, The Weinstein Company will bring the feature adaptation of Richelle Mead’s popular series Vampire Academy to screens, where it will fall into one of two categories; the young adult book-to-screen adaptations that work or the young adult book-to-screen adaptations that don’t. There’s really no predicting which way this one will fall, but with Heathers scribe Daniel Waters and Mean Girls director Mark Waters involved, not to mention the promising source material, we’re hopeful that this one will be a winner. In the meantime, we’re starting to see some new promotional content circulating for the film.
If you’ve been following Vampire Academy’s Facebook page, you know TWC’s been pretty generous in the way of visuals, particularly as it pertains to snappy, sharable memes. But the above poster falls into the more traditional camp in terms of spreading the word. It comes courtesy of Sugarscape and is the U.K. poster for the movie. It lacks all of the green of the U.S. poster, banking on pink and lockers. Are there lockers at St. Vladamirs? Regardless, the international poster scores points for emphasizing the title of the movie, which is more than can be said for the U.S. one, which puts the tagline front and center:
Stars Zoey Deutch and Lucy Fry can be seen in both posters, walking a bit less close together in the U.K. poster than they are in the U.S. But in both, Deutch’s Rose is holding a stake, which kind of makes sense, as she’s training to protect her Moroi vampire best friend Lissa (Fry) against the evil Strigoi vampires that pose a threat to them. Of course, fans of the book may take issue to the sight of Rose with a stake in her hand, as stake-training isn’t introduced to Rose in the first book. But that’s old news at this point, as Daniel Waters has already openly admitted that Rose’s accelerated training is one of the changes made from the book to the movie.
Moving on to another character, let’s talk about Natalie Dashkov, who’s played by Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland. BuzzSugar shared a few photos of Hyland in the film, and as you can see, she’s changed her look a bit for this movie…
Cute curls and glasses make her look a bit less like the popular girl, which is fitting, as Natalie’s not exactly the most popular girl at St. Vladimirs.
Finally, there’s the music. The official soundtrack for Vampire Academy is available for pre-order and releases February 11, just a few days ahead of the film’s February 14 release date. Here’s the list of tracks on the album:
