Topher Grace’s version of Venom in Spider-Man 3 may not have been the most intimidating thing in the world, but that doesn’t mean there’s no hope to see a terrifying version of the villain become a star of his own movie. Todd MacFarlane, who created the character as it first appeared in the Spider-Man comic books, told Newsarama that Venom should be “creepier than what he was in Spider-Man 3."
MacFarlane added he didn’t even know that Venom was a human character when he created him, which resulted in a hulking, fanged creature, not just a guy in a suit. Even if the character remains Eddie Brock, though, MacFarlane says they could push the envelope a bit more. "You don't want to scare the kids, because the kids love the character. But I think you could add a little bit of a creep factor.”
If superhero movies in the future try to emulate The Dark Knight’s creepiness, it’s entirely likely we’ll see a much darker version of Venom in a spinoff movie. Note to Sony executives: Bring Todd MacFarlane on board. I know I’ve complained about pandering to fanboys and the original comic books in the past, but this guy clearly knows his stuff.

i believe they should make Venom way way way darker. But for the love of God please let Topher return as Venom. Topher is the one and only Eddie Brock.
Excuse me, Joshua, but WHAAAAT?!?! Topher is the one and only Eddie Brock? Have you ever SEEN Eddie Brock? He's huge! And a bully! Topher Grace is pretty much the antithesis of Eddie Brock, and I don't just mean size wise. Eddie Brock is not supposed to be snarky, he's supposed to be a jealous asshole, and Topher didn't pull that off well at all in Spiderman 3. Not at all.
To stick up for comic book writers a bit, I think the above article should be a little more clear about who "created" the Venom character.
I think a more appropriate title for McFarlane would be "co-creator."
The Venom Symbiote first appeared in Secret Wars vol.1, #8 where Spider-Man first encountered it and unwittingly merged with it. Artist Mike Zeck was responsible for creating the Alien costume design - the black costume. After Spider-Man rejected it, the Symbiote merged with Eddie Brock, its most well-known host, in The Amazing Spider-Man #298 (March 1986).
This is the issue that was illustrated by McFarlane, but it was written by David Michelinie, a very talented writer who came up with the concept of Venom as a villian.
