Video: Gary Oldman Gets Enraged About Athletes Who Act
Gary Oldman was nominated for his first Academy Award this year, and came pretty damn close to winning for his brilliant and terse performance in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, until Jean Dujardin rode The Artist hype all the way to victory. But of course he didn't need an Oscar to prove his cred as a great actor-- and if you need more proof, look no further than this clip from Jimmy Kimmel Live!. No, seriously-- Oldman stopped by for a fake PSA for a group called Actors Against Athletes Acting, and it's both funny and a tour de force performance, topped with a pretty terrible attempt at shooting a basket. Take a look below.
Oldman spent a lot of his early career playing the unhinged villain type, in movies like Dracula and Air Force One, but these days is more familiar as a respectable, glasses-wearing man, like Commissioner Gordon in the Batman movies or George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. But in this one clip, you get both! Now that's what I call a bargain.
The thing that I can't figure out, though, is which athlete's acting career Oldman is so worked up about. Jimmy Kimmel name checks Shaquille O'Neal in the intro, but Shaq hasn't acted since 2001's The Wash (unless you count his appearance as himself in Jack and Jill and what looks like an upcoming cameo in Grown Ups 2). Is LeBron planning an acting career we didn't know about? Has Kevin Garnett set his sights on Hollywood? Maybe if Gary Oldman would stop yelling for a minute he could answer these burning questions.
