Everyone behind Avatar already knows they've got the geek audience in the bag, but they also know that it will take a lot more than that to make the movie profitable. And you know they're serious about marketing this thing when they're trying to get old people to see it. The 13 minute 60 Minutes segment on Avatar that aired last night basically amounts to a "Don't be scared of all this technology!" marketing push, and really, it worked pretty well. Cameron is on hand to talk about his movie without screaming at anyone or making weird birthing metaphors, and getting deep behind the scenes of Avatar doesn't just demystify the 3D rendering process, but is pretty cool to see to boot.
Check out the full 13-minute segment below, which includes some great Avatar behind the scenes footage as well as conversations about Cameron's entire filmmaking history, including the story of how he talked his way out of having to cast O.J. Simpson as the Terminator. He even brings his notorious ego to his directorial debut, Piranha 2: "It's the very best flying piranha movie ever made." And to know what those NSWF letters on the hat you see above stand for, you'll have to watch the video. Gotta love him.
