There’s probably no reason for panic yet, but Viggo Mortensen thought you might want to know that nobody has talked to him about being in Guillermo del Toro’s new set of Lord of the Rings films. MTV asked him what was up with those Hobbit movies and he said, “I haven’t heard anything… I met [Guillermo] once years ago, but haven’t talked to him since.”
They’re still in the scriptwriting stage, so there may be no reason to talk to him yet. Though if you’re the production company in charge of this thing you might want to start thinking about getting these actors under some sort of contract before they get too busy doing something else. In the case of Mortensen though, they probably have plenty of time to spare in that regard. Odds are he won’t be in the first movie anyway, since it’s supposed to stick fairly closely to “The Hobbit” novel, in which his character of Aragorn makes no appearance. If there’s a place for Aragorn, it’ll be in the second movie which is still a long, long, long way off.
That probably explains why people like Ian McKellan, who would appear as Gandalf in the very first movie, has been running around telling everyone that he’s already in. They’d have to get him locked up first. The good news is that Viggo still seems keen to do it. He affirms, “Obviously,” he said. “I would rather have the chance to play that role myself since I originated it on film than have someone else do it.”

One of the reasons Viggo wouldn't be able to play Aragorn in "The Hobbit" is because he is a little too old. At the time of the hobbit, Aragorn would have been about 9 years old. I think that he can act fairly well, but I don't think he could pull off looking like a 9 year old. Depending on what the other film covers, he might be able to show up, but we won't know until more info is given showing what story will be told.
There is NO other Aragorn!! Viggo Mortensen brought the character to life and its only fitting that he remain that character. Maybe somewhere in the Hobbit, there could be little 'flash forwards' with him reprising that role that he did splendidly! How about Orlando Bloom bringing back the role as Legolas too!!! Cannot wait to see what happens.
Do any of you on this site actually know anything about the Hobbit other than what's in the movies? The Hobbit takes place long before LOTR. It wouldn't make sense for half the actors in LOTR to return for it.
I really really hope that they don't put Aragorn in the Hobbit. Then I'd put myself up to sue New Line myself :-) I hope everyone involved in the production, and those writing articles about, it reads the book first, before jumping to any conclusions.
Thank you, Andre. And I wish they'd stop calling them the "new set of Lord of the Rings movies." The Hobbit is very far removed from TLOTR. The only plot connectors of note are Gandalf and the Ring. There is NO Aragorn, there is NO Legolas. There is Bilbo, Gandalf, Smaug, Thirteen Dwarves, and a whole schwack of wood elves and lakemen. Also spiders. Creepy creepy spiders. And goblins. And wargs. And eagles. And giant bear shapeshifters. Boy, I hope they spread all this over the two movies, rather than inventing a storyline for the second one.
