Viggo Talks Hobbit And Del Toro Plans His Cameo

Viggo Talks Hobbit And Del Toro Plans His Cameo The Hobbit is getting closer to filming and that means at some point, we should get some casting news out of New Zealand. Ian McKellan is almost certainly in it but everything else is up in the air. In particular there’s been a lot of speculation and conflicting information where Viggo Mortensen is concerned. Will Aragorn be in it? Is Viggo even interested if he is?

Mortensen did little to clear things up today when he talked to Coming Soon on the subject of Middle Earth and told them, “I think they're just worried about shooting the first part of that movie which doesn't involve my character.” Right, so he won’t be in the first movie and really, nobody thought he would be. It’s the second one that we’re kind of hoping Aragorn can show up in. But whether he well, well, Viggo doesn’t seem to have any more idea than we do. He says, “My character is around at times--in the middle, but it would only be if they made a second movie or connecting movie that connected 'The Hobbit' to 'The Lord of the Rings' that I might appear, which would be great.”

At least he sounds like he’d do it if there’s a part for him, and that, is great.

We may not know if Viggo will be in the new Lord of the Rings movies but we do now know of at least one other person who definitely will be. Guillermo del Toro is directing the movies, of course, but he’ll also appear in them! He dropped by The One Ring to tell them he’s working on his Hobbit cameo. Says Del Toro, “I had a hand on the design of the creature and I will personally sculpt the appliances that will be applied on my face and hands. I used to sculpt the creatures for NECROPIA (my FX company) and I miss it a bit. I will have a line or two and die quickly”

There’s precedent here. Peter Jackson had similar cameos in the Lord of the Rings movies he directed. In Return of the King he’s one of the pirates who come by boat to attack Gondor, and is quickly shot with an arrow and killed. In The Two Towers he’s in Helms Deep hurling a spear at attacking Uruk. In The Fellowship of the Ring, he’s in the town of Bree and you can spot him as the hobbits walk past him.

The difference is, though, that Peter Jackson never gave himself any lines. He’s just background and in two out of three cameos he’s background that dies so quickly you may not notice him. Guillermo del Toro is giving himself lines which, always makes me nervous. I think Hitchcock had it right, director cameos should be subtle little Easter eggs, not M. Night Shyamalan ego explosions. I’m sure, however, that Del Toro must know what he’s doing. He may have lines, but he seems intent on following the Peter Jackson pattern of dying quickly. If not, maybe somebody will show him Lady in the Water.
