The somewhat troubled marketing campaign for what is without a doubt one of the year’s best films, just got a little weirder. I’m talking of course, about The Wackness, a movie I and just about everyone else at Sundance fell in love with, but whose trailers haven’t managed to convince anyone else it might be worth giving a chance. At least not yet.
So now the film’s distributor, Sony Pictures Classics, is trying a different tact. They’re going You Tube with this bitch, and they’ve posted the first in what looks like it’s going to be a series of faux public access television shows from 1994, hosted by the main character of The Wackness, Luke Shapiro. The first of these is posted for you below. I’m not quite sure what to make of it myself, but as someone who has seen the film let me assure you that this really has nothing at all to do with the movie. Luke is not Wayne Campbell in the film. He doesn’t have his own show. In fact, he doesn’t even seem like the same character in this. Very odd. Take a look:
