Waiting For Superman, Inside Job, Exit Through The Gift Shop Make Oscar Doc Shortlist![]()
Out of 101 documentary features released this year, the Academy has narrowed down a list of 15 films that will compete for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar, including buzzy hits like Inside Job and Waiting for Superman, Sundance and art world sensation Exit Through the Gift Shop from street artist Banksy, and two films about soldiers in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, The Tillman Story and Restrepo.
As always there are a few snubs, though most of the year's heaviest hitters are included. Notably missing is Catfish, the Rogue Pictures release that was one of the more widely seen documentaries of the year but also came scrutiny from those who thought it might have been stage. Also missing are Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, 12th and Delaware, A Film Unfinished, Last Train Home and The Oath, all of which had received pockets of critical support. You can see the full list of 15 below, via Oscars.org. Of the bunch I'd expect to see a fistfight between Inside Job and Waiting for Superman for the top prize; both are highly topical (the economic collapse and education, respectively) and have massive waves of buzz behind them. Personally I'll be rooting for Exit Through the Gift Shop, one of the most energetic and creative films-- not just documentaries-- I've seen all year. If the Academy is feeling particularly punkish this year, maybe they'll give the statue to the anonymous street artist after all. * “Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer” Alex Gibney, director (ES Productions LLC) |
