Wall-E Goes Over Well At WonderCon

Wall-E Goes Over Well At WonderCon Pixar has won me over time and time again with their philosophy of character driven stories. There are so many studios out there who would grind out movies just because they could create computer animated films, but Pixar continues to focus on characters and stories first and impressive visuals secondly, which results in them delivering both in joyous little packages.

It sounds like this year’s Pixar release, Wall-E is going to be along those exact same lines. Some advance footage was shown recently at WonderCon, as well as a little discussion from writer/director Andrew Stanton, who previously helmed A Bug’s Life and Finding Nemo.

Much like Nemo was just as much a quest of a father trusting his son’s independence as much as it was a physical journey, and Toy Story was a simple buddy movie with toys involved, Wall-E is building on a simple story concept: a love story.

We’ve been told Wall-E is the story of a robot left behind on Earth long after mankind has left the polluted planet; the story of a robot who spent 300 years doing what he was made for who suddenly discovers what he was meant for: love. That love is for a female robot, Eve, who winds up on Earth briefly when the ship she’s on lands on Earth to investigate. Wall-E meets Eve and falls in love, following her into the depths of space.

Even though only a few brief trailers have been seen so far, a few critics have accused Stanton of ripping on the design of Short Circuit robot Johnny-5 for Wall-E’s title character. Leave it to the cynics to find something to bitch about even though we’ve only seen a few seconds of the character. Stanton still addressed these complaints at WonderCon, stating the design actually came from a simple pair of binoculars. The use of that binocular-style design allows personality without a full face, and from there the form of the robot is entirely practical: a moving trash compactor (Wall-E’s purpose) with tank treads that allow him to move over any terrain. Rather than this being a human in robot form, Stanton designed the character to be a robot first, then figured out how to make it communicate emotions and thoughts humans could relate to.

So how well have audiences related to the robot character? Well, even though we haven’t seen much, I’m fascinated by the robot and can’t wait for the movie. However, take the word of someone who has seen more than I have. First Showing has a report on several clips Stanton showed at WonderCon, including the lonely robot playing with items disposed by the humans as trash, the meeting of Wall-E and Eve, and a desperate attempt by Wall-E to stay with “the only friend he has ever had.” Their reaction: laughter, joy, and tears.

It truly sounds like Pixar has done it again. If they can get fans to tears with a couple of brief clips, imagine what the whole movie will be like. The site goes on to draw parallels between Wall-E and the vibe of the space sequences of 2001 - pretty hefty parallels. Something tells me Stanton will be proud of that comparison, however, as the writer/director admitted he is trying to create a feel like movies from the golden age of sci-fi, like Blade Runner, using Pixar’s technology to create lens flares and barrel distortion like you would find in classic titles.

All of this news just continues my excitement for Wall-E. I have no doubt this movie is going to be spectacular and another big hit for Pixar. I just wish it was coming out sooner than that June 27th release date.
