I have to admit I’ve made two fanboy geekish pilgrimages in my life. The first was for the traveling Star Wars tour during the movie’s 25th Anniversary. Sadly, my planning powers weren’t well developed at the time and I found myself arriving at the National Air and Space Museum a few hours before closing, with a two hour wait to get in. The force was not with me that day. The second one was for the traveling Babylon 5 experience, which I did make it to. I got to meet Stephen Furst, and see props from the show; it was cool in that way that only geeks can think something is cool.
Now Harry Potter fans will have the same opportunity Star Wars and Babylon 5 gave their fans. Warner Brothers is putting out a bunch of the movies’ props, costumes, and set pieces on a five year, multi-city tour. According to MTV Movies Blog, over 10,000 square feet of displays are planned, including recreations of the Gryffindor common room and Hagrid’s hut.
The numbers don’t quite add up for the tour. It’s planned to last five years but won’t begin until 2009. With the last movie most likely scheduled to hit theaters in 2011 and no new books on the way, the tour will go longer than the franchise they are supposed to help promote. Can Harry Potter fandom outlast the movies and books and still make this successful? Who wants to bet Warners shuts down their plans shortly after Deathly Hallows hits DVD and the fresh hype is over with?
