Sacha Baron Cohen is up to his old tricks, and unfortunately, they seem increasingly less interesting the second time around. When Borat was ready to hit theatres a few years ago, newscasters and TV show hosts alike were flabbergasted by the fact that the character from the movie came to their interviews rather than the actor who played him. Cohen would go out of his way to create awkward situations, leaving whichever show he was on left to pick up the pieces after he left.
Now Bruno is making the media rounds and everything he does is to be expected. People like Conan O’Brien see it coming, making it far less edgy and unpredictable. I imagine this is how Andy Kaufman began to feel at the end of his ingenious career, straining to surprise people but falling just short, as was the case on Thursday night when Bruno visited Conan on his brand new Tonight Show.
