Let’s face it: A lot of actors take voiceover roles in animated movies because it’s an easy paycheck. So maybe you thought Johnny Depp was just taking a turn at cashing his, by voicing the title character in Rango. But to film the movie, it looks like he had to do a lot more than simply show up, sit on a stool, and make funny noises into a microphone while sipping lattes.

Instead director Gore Verbinski actually had the actors act the movie out on a stage, while recording their voices. Somewhere out there, apparently, exists a version of Rango in which the entire movie is done using live actors. The film wasn’t motion captured, but the animators did use these performances as reference points. You’ll see what I mean in the Rango behind the scenes featurette embedded below.
