Rick Baker is a true genius of his craft. The special effects artist and designer has been working in the film industry now for over 40 years and has crafted some of Hollywood’s greatest, most memorable monsters and makeup, be it the werewolf in An American Werewolf in London, Harry and the Hendersons, Ed Wood, The Nutty Professor, Men in Black, How The Grinch Stole Christmas and The Wolfman. And did I mention that he won an Oscar for each of those movies?

I was recently invited to Baker’s studio in Glendale, California where he was kind enough to talk to me about his work on Men In Black 3, which is in theaters this weekend. Watch the interview below to learn about Baker’s approach to the film, how technology has affected his work, and what he thinks when he looks back at his older work.

00:13 – This is a franchise you’ve worked within before, so is maintaining the aesthetic of the universe a big part of the job?

02:45 – Working on a PG-13 movie vs. an R-rated movie

03:49 – When designing villains like Boris the Animal is part of the process making the inner evil show on the outside?

06:22 – Was Boris shooting spikes out of his hands always part of the design?

07:45 – Is advancing technology in terms of picture clarity both at home and in theaters something that has greatly affected your work?

08:39 – Because CGI can do so much nowadays, do you allow yourself a bit more freedom in the design process knowing that some of the more challenging stuff can be supported with digital effects?

09:28 – Do you ever find yourself looking back at your old work?

To get a closer look at the work that Rick Baker did on Men In Black III, be sure to check out the gallery below, which not only contains stills of the finished product, but also Baker working behind the scenes.

The film, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, stars Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Michael Stuhlbarg, Emma Thompson and Alice Eve. To see more, head over to our Blend Film Database.
