Watch This Now: Trailer For Scorsese's Shutter Island![]()
If the below trailer for Shutter Island were for any other movie, by any other director, with any other cast, I might mistake it for a generic horror thriller masquerading as something more interesting. But this is the next movie by Martin Scorsese, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and featuring a killer cast that all seems to be putting their all into turning in holy-crap-creepy performances. Yeah, you know you're interested.
Apple.com has the high-res versions, but you can check it out right now in our embed below. In Shutter Island DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo star as U.S. Marshals (with distinct Boston accents) dispatched to a remote island that hosts a hospital for the criminally insane. A female prisoner has escaped, and it's up to them to figure out how she did it and where she is. Michelle Williams, Ben Kingsley, Jackie Earle Haley, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson and Max von Sydow also pop up in the trailer, and I think it's better if you just figure out their roles in it for yourself. The movie looks stylish and creepy and definitely a departure from what Scorsese has been up to lately. I'm particularly struck by the shot in which DiCaprio holds WIlliams as she disappears, which you see in the screenshot above. It's not just the disappearing trick-- the halo lighting, the black confetti even the furniture suggest a movie taking place in a strange, stylistically altered world. Is this a sign that Scorsese, late in his career, is still willing to experiment? Even if it's not, this movie looks completely distinctive and fascinating. Watch it all below.
