Watchmen debuted at 12:01am last night to sold out midnight shows around the country. Variety reports that the much touted superhero movie made $4.6 million in midnight showings, during the wee hours of Friday morning. The movie played at late-night showings in more than 1500 theaters around the country.
That’s nearly double what Zack Snyder’s last R-rated fanboy flick, 300 made. That film earned $2.5 million in midnight showings. $4.6 million is a solid number, whether the early attendance of eager fanboys will translate into big weekend numbers remains to be seen. To do it, they’ll need more than the hardcore audience which usually shows up for midnight fangasms.
