Watchmen Stays Faithful To Source

Part of adapting material from one medium to another medium means changing that which doesn’t work in the new medium. Things that you can pull off in a comic book, for instance, don’t necessarily work in the movies. Zack Snyder has already shown quite a bit of skill in adapting a comic book to film with 300, but when you have a story as complex and intricate as Watchmen, even the slightest change could be a potential disaster with fans.

Not to worry, says Nite Owl actor Patrick Wilson, because Snyder has tried to be as true to the source material as possible - something that Wilson says isn’t immediately evident by the script. There’s so much being done in producing Watchmen that’s not on the page, in order to stay loyal to the source material, that Wilson says anyone who got their hands on the script still wouldn’t know what to expect.

Wilson told MTV Movies Blog that little lines have been added from the script to give characters more of their backstory. Or props in the background might pay tribute to characters not present in the movie (a picture of the Twilight Lady will appear in the background of Nite Owl’s cave, with no active reference besides that).

Wilson also says the references to other, more established superhero characters, have been left pretty much as Alan Moore created them. ”The comparisons [with Nite Owl] to Batman are perfect and right on, because no one is trying to say that they’re all that different, it’s all done on purpose” That will hopefully allow the story to continue to serve as a deconstruction of superhero stories.

The best news from Wilson is that, while Snyder let the studio decide what to cut from the script, the ending of the story has been left intact, without a Hollywood ending tacked on. Considering Watchmen can be a downer of a story, that’s really good news.

While we’re on Watchmen news, Cinematical reports that the movie will not only have an IMAX trailer attached to this weekend’s IMAX showing of The Dark Knight, but Watchmen will be bound for an IMAX release as well. I don’t know if Snyder is following in Christopher Nolan’s footsteps, shooting part of the movie in IMAX scale, or if this will be like other Warner Brothers releases that just wind up being shown on the IMAX screens, but expect to find out more when the trailer debuts tomorrow.
