I love pin-up art, and not just because it generally features scantily clad, buxom women in revealing outfits. There’s a great history behind it, it speaks to a certain time in place in our history, a time where drawing babes in bikinis actually meant something. Yes, I said that with a straight face. Anyway, my wife is a fan as well and she has several Alex Vargas prints hanging around the house in strategic locations. The image to your right would be right at home among them, except for one thing: It’s from the movie Watchmen.
The image comes from the guys over at AICN, where you can see a bigger version. It’s an artist’s take on Carla Gugino as Sally Jupiter, done up in Vargas style, as befits the burlesque dancer turned superhero niche Sally filled in the early days of Watchmen’s universe in the 40s. Apparently this drawing is actually in the movie, and plays an important role in introducing the character. As soon as some entrepreneurial poster company can get a frame around it, Sally Jupiter will also play an important role on my wall. Now here’s hoping they haven’t also done one of these for Dr. Manhattan. His penchant for shunning clothes might make that a little more than the average amount of uncomfortable.
