If you're smart you've already bought your tickets to see Watchmen on IMAX this weekend, because I guarantee you those are sold out by now. And if you're like apparently most of Fandango's users, you're buying Watchmen tickets right now, even if you can't get that coveted midnight screening. The online movie ticketer reports that 61% of their sales right now are Watchmen tickets, which is far, far better than 300 was doing four days before its opener. Not surprising, given that director Zack Snyder is a much bigger draw now, but probably a big relief for Warner Bros.
But comparing these numbers to those posted by, say, The Dark Knight, the picture is a little less rosy. Batman's outing was selling 71% of Fandango's tickets over a week before it opened, and that's with competition from all kinds of other summer releases (remember, Mamma Mia! opened against The Dark Knight and was still a huge hit). Not that Watchmen has a lot to be ashamed of; Twilight was similarly selling 63% of tickets before it opened, and we all remember how that turned out.
But really, shouldn't expectations be even higher for Watchmen? It has literally no competition for its opening weekend, and is pretty much the only film guaranteed to be sold out this weekend (except maybe Tyler Perry's). Does this number mean that it really is only fanboys who will be coming out this weekend, and everyone else will stay home? Or has The Dark Knight created such unrealistic expectations that Watchmen will be a big hit-- just not quite another colossal one.
