Watchmen Trial To Begin In January![]()
The seemingly never ending saga of Fox's sour—grapes lawsuit against Warner Bros over the rights ownership to Watchmen was given a further extension after the judge dealing with the case refused to rule on it Monday.
According to Variety, Judge Gary Allen Feess announced that he could not make a ruling as the contract being cited in the case is too open to interpretation so a full trial is required. Feess has said that the case will be heard on Jan 20 due to his commitment to a criminal matter on Jan 6. Fox alleges that under the contentious contract, Larry Gordon never completely reclaimed his rights to the property when Fox abandoned their own attempts to get the movie off the ground and Warners picked it up instead, therefore they have no right to distribute the already-in-the-can movie. As we've brought up endlessly in these stories what should prove interesting in this case is Fox's response should the the judge turn around and ask Fox why it took them nearly 3 years, during which Warners openly developed, shot and started marketing the movie before the studio decided to act on their supposed copyright in February this year. Warners, clearly confident of their position is refusing to alter their planned March 3 release date. |
