Watchmen Will Keep Comedian's Darkest Scenes

By Katey Rich: 2008-08-03 23:13:36
Watchmen Will Keep Comedian's Darkest Scenes For any fans of a book, play or anything else that gets adapted into a movie, the question is always what will make it to the screen and what will get cut. And for fans of Watchmen, it's an even tougher question to answer-- the complex narrative structure of the graphic novel means some scenes will be hard to translate, and the sheer brutality of some moments make it unlikely that a movie aiming for a PG-13 rating will include them.

But Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who is playing the Comedian in the Watchmen movie, has a little reassurance for fans who worry that his nihilistic, often-brutal character will be toned down for the movie. He told Rope of Silicon "There are a couple of things The Comedian does, and I never ever in a million years thought there was something I would have to think twice about, as an actor, but I could make no excuses for it. There were a couple of rough days of filming where I was just like, 'This is tough.'"

A scene he mentions in particular takes place early in the graphic novel, but y'know, SPOILER ALERT just in case. The Comedian and Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup) are in Vietnam after the war has ended-- in Alan Moore's alternative universe, we won the war thanks to the help of superheroes. The Comedian is approached by a Vietnamese woman who is carrying his child, but when she demands he stay and help care for the baby, he shoots the woman at point-blank range.

"We're staying very true to this whole thing and yeah, that's there. It had to be," Morgan said, causing thousands of Comedian fans to breathe a big sigh of relief. Morgan's entire interview with Rope of Silicon is fascinating, and is helpfully peppered with panels from the graphic novel to remind us all of what kind of son-of-a-bitch Morgan is playing in the movie. Morgan's commitment to the character is evident, and seems to guarantee that it will be an unpolished, disturbing version of the Comedian we'll see onscreen in March.
