Perhaps because of the sequels or maybe because of the subject matter, American Pie hasn’t aged as well as it should have. I’m not going to lie and pretend it was brilliant, but the first film was certainly a lot more than a run of the mill high school raunch comedy that somehow got popular. Movies like that make a fortune because they’re about more than just having sex with pies, but in retrospect, it’s the pie fucking most people remember. Think of it like Heathers. Give me one sentence, and I’ll be forced to tell you it’s a film about a hot chick killing popular kids. Allow me a paragraph and I’ll explain why it’s not really about that at all.

After a slew of less than stellar theatrical sequels and a few horrid straight-to-dvd cash grabs, the familiar faces behind the original American Pie are returning to set the franchise straight. Up to this point, we’ve just been hearing names: Seann William Scott, Jason Biggs and Eugene Levy. They’ll all definitely be back along with Thomas Ian Nichols, Mena Suvari, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Alyson Hannigan and Jennifer Coolidge, but now some plot details are trickling out as well. According to What's Playing, the central theme follows the kids heading back together for their ten year reunion. Oz is a high roller residing in Malibu; Stifler is a complete failure; and Jim is a viral sensation after his video with Nadia found a second life on the internet. Expect a possible rekindling of the romance between Oz and Heather, as well as a possible extramarital fling for Jim.

You would have to expect there’s a great script in place to get the whole cast back together, right? Not all of these people left American Pie for raging success, but Seann William Scott and Alyson Hannigan are doing pretty well for themselves. Let’s hope there was a clear, non-monetary reason everyone returned, and the film at least eclipses everything released after the original.
