Fast & Furious 6 Blu-ray
There can’t be any talk about this latest Fast & Furious release without a nod to the late Paul Walker. I watched the Blu-ray edition for the latest movie in the franchise, Fast & Furious 6, just a short time after news of Walker’s untimely death hit the press. Mentions of Walker’s character, Brian and his parenting skills and his role in the team will hit especially hard for fans, and lend a poignant note to an otherwise fast-paced and thrilling film.
At the beginning of Fast & Furious 6, our crew of criminals have retired and taken up residence around the world. Then, Dom (Vin Diesel), Brian (Paul Walker), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Ludacris), Han (Sung Kang) and more agree to take on a mission, helping none other than the United States of America. This might seem a bit nonsensical, but it’s actually a sweet deal, in which the members of Dom’s crew will receive full amnesty for their lives of crime if they are able to take down bad boy Owen Shaw (Luke Evans). The terms of the deal are delivered by two agents, Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Riley Hicks (Gina Carano), but it takes a little time to figure out the semantics.
Fast & Furious 6, like its predecessor, Fast Five, has a legitimate plot and even more exciting hand-to-hand fight sequences than fans may be used to with this franchise. That doesn’t mean the movie has wholly changed directions. One road racing sequence in the streets of London features some of the same spirit that the original movie offers, with scantily clad women strutting around gleaming cars lit under the lamplight. During that sequence, the movie is a little goofy but fun, but on the whole, the film is gritty and full of serious business action.
Director Justin Lin explains that Fast & Furious 6 was initially conceived as Furious 6, the companion movie to Fast Five and the end of an era for the franchise. A lot of the characters’ story arcs change during the sixth movie, and with Walker’s death, things will need to be very different when the seventh movie resumes production.
Proceeds from the Fast & Furious 6 home entertainment release will go to Walker’s charity Reach out Worldwide. You can order the movie over at Amazon.
Best Special Feature: Universal Studios Home Entertainment has started to put together some really nice sets. With Fast & Furious 6, the extra "Take Control" offers lengthy interviews with numerous members of the cast and crew who extensively dissect a good portion of the scenes. Do you want to know why certain cars were chosen for the flick? Do you want to know what it felt like for Michelle Rodriguez to fight with Gina Carano? All of these questions and many, many more are answered.
