Weekend Box Office
Batman Begins, indeed. Don't be fooled by the weekend take, which suggests it didn't do as well as Mr. and Mrs. Smith. When you look at what Batman has banked since opening on Wednesday it has done quite well for itself. That said, in the strictest sense it failed to unseat the Smiths as the biggest weekend opener so far this year (not counting behemoth Star Wars). I guess Brad and Angelina's scandalous non-relationship couldn't be eclipsed by Tom and Katie's petty proposal. There's not much to threaten Mr. and Mrs. next week either, so all eyes now turn to the June 29 release of War of the Worlds. At the pace Tom and Kate are keeping, their relationship could very well be on the rocks by then, generating the kind of buzz the film will need to do well. Or maybe, people don't really care about that stuff and go to see movies because they look like good films. It's hard to say. The other major new release this week, The Perfect Man, found the perfect number to open with coming in at number 7. Having seen the film I can tell you it was lucky to do so well. Howl's Moving Castle is the only upward moving show this week. As its release continues to expand expect it to maybe even make it into the top ten later this summer.
