Weekend Box Office - Aging Gnomes Top The Chart![]()
This weekend Hollywood's elite gather to pat each other on the back and hand out awards to those among their ranks who they think have made the best contribution to filmmaking this year. In a sad twist, as they go about this business the movies that pull down Hollywood's batting average are staking out top spots at the box office.
Things were so stagnant this weekend that three week old Gnomeo and Juliet floated to the top like a bloated corpse. The mediocre animation entry from Disney slowly inched its way passed the $100 million mark in worldwide sales over the weekend, but that's not likely anything to celebrate. Its budget has not yet been declared, but unless Disney somehow managed to crank it out under triple digit millions, the gnomes will likely come up short. Hall Pass got a pass in general from audienes. Its $13 million lukewarm reception was enough to land the number two spot, just beating out last weekend's number one Unknown which slipped to $12 million and third place. Nicholas Cage hit a new low with Drive Angry which banked a miserable $5 million for a very distant ninth place. That's the second lowest wide release opening of his career. If you have time to spare from reviewing the Oscar winners, check out the top ten chart below:
