Weekend Box Office - At World's End

By Scott Gwin: 2007-06-03 19:31:22

There was no way on earth Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End wasn't going to hold on to the number one spot two weekends in a row. None of this week's new releases stood a chance, but that doesn't mean they didn't hold their own.

Few things get average single guys aged 18 - 35 into a theater faster than the hopes of a love scene between a hot actress like Katherine Heigl and an average joe looking guy like Seth Rogen. Hey, if can happen in the movies, right? Tack on that the movie makes comedy out of their worst nightmare, a one night stand turning into imminent fatherhood, and there's no wonder a movie like Knocked Up made $29 million on its debut weekend.

I suppose it didn't hurt that moderately funny comedies are hard to come by these days, so anything that comes close or surpasses expectation gets glowing critical accolades. I wonder if Judd Apatow has sent Eddie Murphy, Johnny Knoxville and the Wayan's Brothers a thank you card yet for helping to make him look so good?

Mr. Brooks rolled into fourth place with $10 million which means roughly 3/4 of Kevin Costner's paycheck is covered. Between that and what Demi Moore and William Hurt probably also demanded, it looks like the victims' blood isn't the only red this movie will be seeing.

Soccer drama Gracie scored only $1.3 million and at sixth place looks to be disappearing from theaters soon. It shouldn't be too much of a surprise, though, since feel good sports movies have been a dime a dozen lately. At least this one was probably made on a shoestring budget (well, Shue-string budget, really...a little joke for the few of you who know what the movie's really about) and with less to lose just might make back the few million spent to make it. For the full weekend top ten check out the chart below.

Next weekend Danny Ocean and his crew return for Ocean's 13, the fourth "part 3" installation film of 2007's "Summer of Sequels". No word yet on whether or not its apparent return to the Vegas glam style of the original will result in a better movie than the mediocre Ocean's 12, but you know what they say about the number thirteen. Horror redux Hostel Part II (yes, yet another sequel) will also open along with Surf's Up, an animated movie hoping to ride what remains of the penguin wave.

Look for Ocean's 13 to knock the Pirates out of the number one spot, but not by much. Brad Pitt's star power isn't what it used to be. I know he's lost my respect lately especially after he so cruelly imposed the name Pax Pitt on his newest adopted child.
