Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End got a luke warm reception at the box office this weekend. Well, OK, it would have been a really great weekend for nearly any other movie, but for the successor to and continuation of last year's record smashing Dead Man's Chest it was something of a anti-climactic opening.
Of course, the third Pirates film took first place for the weekend, but the $112 million it cleared was too low to beat the $135 million that Dead Man's Chest raked in last summer. I can't say I'm disappointed. The second film was a major disappointment and third was just as disappointing. It looks like at least a few people out there wised up to the franchise's declining quality and didn't rush out to hand over their money for another unworthy sequel.
The picture might have been a little brighter if the ticket sales from the early Thursday evening showings (which totaled $14 million) had been included, but official weekend numbers only count from midnight Thursday to midnight Sunday.
Pirates' performance was somewhat surprising to an industry that was expecting the movie to follow last summer's suit and be the biggest moneymaker of the year. At this point it will have to settle for a distant second. Spider-Man 3 still holds the record for the biggest weekend opening and highest gross sales for the year. At World's End couldn't break the first of those records and it doesn't look too hopeful for it to overtake the second one either. Not that Disney is hurting, though. Even given At World's End's massive $300 million budget, the movie has already made back more than that amount in international sales. Captain Jack isn't king of the American box office, but he's still turning Disney a pretty piece o'eight.
UPDATE: Full and updated numbers for the weekend sales for the Memorial Day Weekend and Pirates managed a weak record for the holiday. Check here for updates and the full three and four day totals.

Are you crazy?!?! Pirates 3 was by far the best of the entire franchise! Were you watching it BLIND?? Excellent effects, great plot...everything you need in a movie.
I agree with Kevin. Pirates 3 to me was the best of the series, or rather the one I enjoyed seeing at the cinema the most. It had what every good movie needs, a thick plot line (as thick as a summer blockbuster should be), action that makes you look like you're not capable of brain function while watching, I think my jaw was dropped on every action scene, and the film was also much funnier than the others. Not as much subtle humor, but humor nonetheless. I also liked that the film was much more "graphic" in violence. No I'm not a nut who loves blood, but I felt the film grew up and I felt like I was watching pirates, like real, dangerous, rape and pillage pirates, not grown men dressed in drag fighting over a ship, or a heart.
As for the second pirates film making more money, I feel the second movie doomed the third when it came to box office records. Many people left the second film very disappointed. The second film lacked substance. I found it entertaining as hell, a returned to see it a few more times, but just because I enjoyed it doesn't hide the fact that it was lackluster in plot. In TV you have "Filler Episodes," that really serve no purpose to the overall scope of the show, but are fun to watch. That is what Pirates 2 was. All it did was give you some cool giant squid to look at, showed off Davy Jones, and gave very little backstory to him, and set the dinner table in high, man-eating squid fashion for the third film in the series.
Josh T, you tried telling Kevin that that was only his opinion, and that Pirates 3 had the worst reviews of the three films. Although it is Kevin's opinion, and Pirates 3 did really get worse reviews, isn't it only an opinion from the critics that gave Pirates a bad review. If they say the film is sh**, and not to see it, isn't that an opinion. I know they're supposed to not be biased in how they critique a film, but come on they're human just like you and I. I never read the opinions of critics, because you have to see the film yourself, without anybody influencing how you feel about the movie prior to seeing it yourself.
It wasn't that bad. I think next to the first one, number 2 and 3 aren't nearly as good (imo). I think some of the scenes needed to be trimmed down or left out completely. None the less, Captain Jack Sparrow's still the man and I'd see a fourth one regardless of the reviews.
I did my part and saw this Sunday night, after midnight... Thought it was very good and I can't stand Orlando Bloom. Underrated and Spiderman 3 is WAY overrated.
The first film was great, the second film was good, but left you hanging, this one ties it all up and heaps it on top to boot!
Pirates of the Carabean At World's End is an epic adventure! It does relay on the (fact) that the view has watched and understood the previous two editions prior to viewing this one! Ye be warned!
This film relates the story in word and picture. You have to pay attention to both the viusuals and the dialog inorder to keep up with the numerous plot twists and changes in the group dynamics. Each charater has an agenda, and they are continuously manipulating the circumstances and each other inorder to stack the deck in thier own favor. They are true to thier characters, but one must employ more than a half witt inorder to fully enjoy this. An effort well beyond your average film crittic, given the look of the reviews!
Action - Adventure - Humour - Romance - and a plot that is thicker than pea-soup! Can it get any better than this? It does... they use excelente special effects.. great visuals and awsome battel corriography! (However you spell it).
Parts I liked best. Barbosa at the helm of the Pearl... and the wedding!
Part I liked least, the 50 foot cajan woman... did anyone catch what she was saying?
Best effect.. in the mind of Jack Sparrow... or the many Jack Sparrow's (all of them) not a bad way to depict the mind of someone going mad....
Favorit bit: Sparrow's 'improved' monocular! I loved that!
so...
REWATCH One and Two from DVD, and then go enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! You will come out of the threater with a grin from ear to ear and a stich in your side from laughing your (*&^%) off!
As for the ticket sales... umm, it was a THREE day weekend (sales were spread out more) and it had two very hot compeating films... I had a hard time choosing between Pirates Three or Shrek 3 (I wanted to see both, but could only afford the time and money for one film). So given the three way split... and the additional day of spread... it realy did very, very well at the box office!
I have seen this movie 4 times since the 8 pm showing Thursday. I really like it. Of course it wasn't as good as the first one, sequels are rarely as good as the original. But I thought it was great.
they are all lame.
pirates 3 was by far the best.
in humor.
in special effects.
in story line.
and anyother aspects.
and i also dont know how you could see two of a film. thne not return for the 3rd and maybe even final move????
that doesnt make sense.
ive already seen it twice.
both of which times it was completely full in the theater.
I LOVE JACK SPARROW.
HES MY HERO.
EVREYONE WHO DONT LIKE IT.
IS LAMMMME
Spiderman 3 was the stupidest movie made following the fantastic 4. Not only did it not follow the comic book storyline, the club dancing scene? what was that all about? spiderman 3 sucked for the true spiderman fans, as well as a movie. Now, compared to Pirates 3.....pirates 3 totally beats spiderman 3.
it was a fitting end to a great trilogy, calling it disappointing is a bit over the top, when Gwin can make a movie that makes more than ONE million dollars in a weekend, i'll consider listening to what he has to say
I enjoyed the first one the most it was the least complicated and actually had a story line
the second and third make it feel like this should have gone to tv honestly with all the relationships and stuff youd expect it from a season 5 of greys anatomy or something....
the first is the best the second was horrible and the third is just stupid
yes everyone who likes them likes them for its humour, effects and story and i understand i do too.....but its not good as a movie....it entertains sure as hell though...........but when you watch a movie like Return of the King or Titanic you understand the difference between what a real movie is and not some silly adventure which gets more ludicras as it goes along
i think worlds end will not beat dead mans chest at box office internationally...or maybe will kinda equal it.....it wont definetly beat the 52 mill standing in between the 2nd and 3rd places between Return of the king and dead mans chest
