If this weekend proved anything it's that when it comes to movies Tina Fey should stick to writing instead of acting. Fey's last film project Mean Girls, which she wrote, opened at a respectable $24 million and went on to gross over $80 million. This weekend her latest acting effort, Baby Mama, which she starred in with fellow SNL performer Amy Poehler, debuted with a slightly less respectable $18 million with the likelihood that it will quickly disappear under the onslaught of upcoming early summer hits.
At the very least Baby Mama can rejoice in the fact that it outperformed this year's most pointless sequel Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay. With $14 million this latest Harold and Kumar adventure bowed in a cool $9 million higher than the first film and will no doubt have outgrossed it by the end of this week. Does that mean a third movie could be on the horizon. I guess that depends on whether Neil Patrick Harris is up for it.
Deception barely snuck into the top ten, opening with a miserable $2.2 million. Only $100,000 separates that movie from the eleventh place spot which means when estimates are updated with actual numbers it could slip off the chart completely. That just goes to show you no matter how many sexy high-profile stars you pack into your sex thriller, if it's boring audiences still won't pay to see it.
