Fake gay guys beat out Harry Potter this weekend. The wizarding world sank from the top spot to number two as the mediocre comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry took in $34 million to be the number one movie this weekend. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which has already crossed the $200 million mark domestically and over half a billion dollars around the globe, took in $32 million. Not bad considering that most fans stayed home this weekend and went without sleep to read the final book in the series which rolled into book stores on Friday night.
Hairspray, the film re-adaptation of the broadway musical, came in at a close third with $27 million. That may prove to be a bit of disappointment. While an official budget cost hasn't been released, it's hard to imagine it being a small number what with that all star cast. I wouldn't think John Travolta would slip into women's clothing for any small sum either.
As July nears a close studios are beginning to sneak in all the crap they hope people might accidentally see in the spirit of going to the movies during the summer. The completely unanticipated thriller starring Lindsay Lohan, I Know Who Killed Me, will open. In only 1200 theaters, it almost doesnt' stand a chance of making the top ten. Given that it's a Lohan film, a better title might have been I Know Who's Killing My Career: ME!. Another worthless piece of drivel in smaller release (1000 theaters) is yet another bizarre rap-star-turned-wannabe-actor film. This one, touted as a golf comedy, bears the painful name Who's Your Caddy and has the distinction of standing in for a Wayan's Brother disaster which I had hoped we might avoid this summer.
Amongst the crap are a few potential gems. Since Americans are too lazy to read subtitles, the acclaimed German film Bella Martha has been recrafted as No Reservations starring Aaron Eckhart and Catherine Zeta Jones. It looks to do fairly well as the one of the few romantic comedies of the summer, but it doesn't stand a chance against the much anticipated Simpson's movie which will rock its way into nearly 4000 theaters. Look for Homer and gang to take number one. I'd bet a Kwik-E-Mart squishy on it.
