Hannah Montana was huge in theaters last weekend but, the filmed version of "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" lost a lot of steam heading into the extension of what was meant to be a one week run. It was generally expected that the movie would drop, but that the drop wouldn't be enough to knock it out of the top two spots. Alas, ya'll, it was not meant to be.
As Hannah dropped over 60% from last weekend, she opened the door for the three new comedies debuting. Two of them took advantage. The third one, argued by critics as funniest, didn't even make the top ten. In fact, it didn't even make the top twenty.
Apart from trying to beat Hannah Montana's concert in the contest for longest, most obnoxious title of the decade, "Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights - From Hollywood to the Heartland" offered little competition. Despite showing in 50% more theaters, Vaughn's rated R comedy crew could barely break the half-million mark, coming in somewhere around twenty-fifth place. To me that's a good sign. If every single piece of reality-TV style film project did as well as Hannah Montana and U2, we'd see an even greater glut of it in theaters. There are too many new movies every weekend as it is.
The other two comedies, which didn't make much of a showing where the funny was concerned, did manage to make some decent money. Fool's Gold which banked more heavily on star power than solid laughs, took in $22 million and earned the right to be called the number one movie in America. Martin Lawrence's Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins came in second with $17 million. That's compared to the $23 million and $27 million that his two Big Momma films made on their opening weekends. Apparently America likes their Martin in a giant female fat suit. For the complete top ten check out the chart below.
In the limited release category there was good news and great news. The critically acclaimed In Bruges opened in only 28 theaters but still managed to make a respectable $471,000. That's a good sign that the movie might get a wider release. Paris Hilton's latest pathetic attempt at acting, the critically panned The Hottie and the Nottie opened in 111 theaters but didn't even make enough cash to buy a new Chevy Malibu. That's a great sign that the movie won't get any wider release at all. Thank heavens for small miracles.
