During the summer there are box office winners and there are box office loses. Cinema Blend provides a round up at the end of every summer blockbuster season. I’m overjoyed to be able to say that when we reviews this year’s results, the abysmal entry The Love Guru is lined up to be one of the losers.
With a $62 million budget and only a $14 million opening weekend the film, Mike Myer’s latest misguided effort about a chastity belt wearing guru, is poised to die fast and quiet. It’s refreshing to see movies like these flounder and lose cash because, let’s face it, financial results are a major factor in deciding whether similar movies get made. Love Guru 2? Not likely. Cool.
Even though that makes all of us the real box office winners this weekend, the movie that earned the most cash was Get Smart. With a $39 million opener, it marks the largest kick-off for a Steve Carell or Anne Hathaway head-lined film. It also shows that Dwayne Johnson may not have completely destroyed his career with last year’s painful The Game Plan. Now if only he hadn’t signed on to play the title character in a movie called The Tooth Fairy.
Iron Man has showed some solid staying power in the last two weeks, holding much steadier than it’s competition for highest grossing movie of the year, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Things are looking good for Iron Man, who has the title pretty much clinched. At this point the only other summer film with a snowball’s chance to give the Marvel hero a run for his money is the DC comics return of Batman in the Dark Knight. But for that to happen, it will have to do over $100 million more in sales than its predecessor. That’s a tough task, even for a guy with bullet proof latex nipples.
