Weekend Box Office - Harry Potter Casts Spell At The Box Office![]()
Warner Brothers is plenty aware that the Harry Potter well is getting ready to dry up, but the first of the two movies that will make up the final installment is making plenty of finale magic for the studio.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 banked a franchise record opening of $125 million, toasting the previous holder Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire which took in $102 million five years ago. While that helped out the November weekend, total sales were still down from this same weekend last year by nearly a quarter. It's a continuing trend marking 2010 as a slowdown year at the box office. At this rate, the year might end up behind last year, a problem for an industry that is already struggling to get audiences in the seats. Megamind snagged a very distant second place with $16 million, but it was enough to push the blue headed genius past the $100 million domestic mark. It's almost ensured a seat in the year's top 20, but with only $136 million in sales internationally against its $130 million budget, it might not stand a villain's chance of turning a profit. Dramatic thriller The Next Three Days was lucky not to end up in one of the last three spots in the top ten. With $6 million it slid in at number five, just above well-reviewed but poorly attended Morning Glory which just missed the $20 million mark in its second weekend.
