Weekend Box Office - Kung Fu Panda

You might not be able to mess with the Zohan, but if you’re an animated panda bear you can kick his butt at the box office.

Kung Fu Panda took an easy win in theaters over the weekend, sweeping in an estimated $60 million. It’s not a record breaking opening as animated movies go, but it is the third largest opening of the year to date. That during a year when the cinema industry is struggling to keep up with last year’s performance.

Sandler’s You Don’t Mess With The Zohan may have taken a distant second place, but you can bet he’s not too bothered. The $40 million the film earned is par for Sandler’s course. He rarely manages to do much better than that, and given this movie’s moderate $90 million budget it’s bound to break even before the summer’s over.

Indiana Jones put things right by staying ahead of Sex and the City this weekend, coming in third place with $22 million. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is slowly narrowing the gap with Iron Man for highest grossing movie of the year. Both films are looking to end up in the low $300 millions, but it’s still anyone’s guess which one will take number one or if one of the remaining summer blockbusters will be able to outshine them both.
