There were only four survivors in the top ten from last week as four new films blazed their way into theaters, bringing with them more cash than has ever been seen at the box office in a single January weekend before.
According to numbers from Box Office Mojo, the third week of January in 2008 saw a total of over $130 million amongst the top twelve films. This weekend the grand total for the same number of movies was over $170 million, a massive leap up. And that's not even counting the cash that may accumulate during tomorrow's holiday.
America may be in an economic crunch but it's still finding enough money to spend hours watching Kevin James whittle his career away on slop like Paul Blart: Mall Cop. With $33 million it was the only film to best last week's top film, Gran Torino. Thanks to that, look for a Paul Blart sequel in the not too distant future. It'll probably co-star Ray Romano. Hey it's not like he's doing anything else.
Defiance expanded to wide release this weekend with disappointing results. Only $9 million rolled in, a rough a start for the $50 million drama. Maybe it would have done better if it had been in 3D? That seemed to work well for My Bloody Valentine which banked $21 million.
