Weekend Box Office - Order of the Phoenix

By Scott Gwin: 2007-07-15 21:31:05

Harry Potter took to the screen for the fifth time this week, smashing yet another completely uninteresting record. Just last week Transformers broke the record for most money made on the slowest day of the week, Tuesday. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix now holds the record for biggest Wednesday ever with $44.2 million, beating out Spider-man 2.

Since Warner Bros. released Harry Potter on a Wednesday instead of a Friday like all the past Potter films, there's no solid way to compare this movie's numbers to its past counterparts. The movie took in $77 million on its first weekend, which is the worst first weekend total of any of the Potter films to date, a comparison that's not quite fair since if took in most of its money two days early. However, $140 million in its first five days is no small feat and indicates that Potter is still WB's golden boy the box office.

The other new release this weekend wasn't quite so magical. After Dark Film's dark horse project Captivity, which has drawn hefty bashings from all but the most blood and gore thirsty critics, opened in only 1,050 theaters which would usually be wide enough to land in the top ten. No luck for Captivity which opened in twelfth place with no hopes of opening wider. No word on whether or not After Dark is actually making any money on their crap films, but with any luck they'll be going under before too long. Now if we could only get WWE Films to start losing money and we might have a start on getting rid of pointless filmmaking.

Next weekend fake homosexuals go up against the transvestites. Adam Sandler and Kevin James will pretend to be gay in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry while John Travolta tries on a dress and a body suit with breasts in Hairspray. It will be a close call between the two, but don't be surprised if Potter comes out on top for one more weekend.
